Valve released a Counter-Strike 2 update on October 22, 2026. Every change is for map scripting, the system Workshop map makers use to add their own rules and events to a map. Valve’s notes list no changes to normal matchmaking, weapons or skins.
What changed
- Hostage scripting: a new CSHostage object lets a map’s script check whether a hostage is being picked up, carried or rescued, who rescued it, and the start and finish time of a pickup. Six new events, such as Instance.OnHostageRescue, let scripts react when a pickup starts or is canceled and when a hostage is picked up, dropped, rescued or killed. CSPlayerPawn.GetHostage finds the hostage linked to a player.
- Preloading: Instance.Precache asks the game to load a resource before the map needs it. The CSPrecache object it returns shows whether the resource is still loading or ready on the server, on players’ computers or for everyone, and can release it when it is no longer needed.
- Console tools: a new Console section can read console variables (the settings you type into the developer console) and change them with Console.SetConvar, which works without sv_cheats and applies the change immediately. Instance.Msg is now Console.Log, and the functions for client commands, server commands and cheat commands moved to Console too.
- Round controls: a new GameRules section lets a script start or end warmup, read or add to a team’s score, and end the current round. Older helpers for warmup, freeze time, the team intro, round time, rounds played and team money moved there as well. Their old locations still work but are deprecated, so map makers should switch to the new names.
- Radar markers in every mode: a map’s radar_element markers can now appear on the radar in any game mode, not only Rush.
- Custom HUDs: custom_hud_layout gets two new top-level classes, HUD_TEAMMENU_VISIBLE and HUD_CHAT_VISIBLE, so a map’s custom HUD can adjust itself while the team menu or chat is open.
- Fixes and clearer warnings: giving a team money with no reason attached (CSTeamMoneyReason.NONE) no longer causes a crash and now works with an amount. The CSTeamMoneyReason and CSWeaponAttackType values now match Valve’s scripting reference file (point_script.d.ts), and two radar and spectator checks return true or false instead of a number. Script warnings now show where in the script the problem happened and which value was wrong, and they count arguments from 0 instead of 1.
- Workshop maps: the map_workshop console command, which loads a Workshop map, now has better autocomplete.
What it means for you
If you play Competitive or Premier, nothing changes, since Valve’s notes list no gameplay, weapon or skin changes. The new tools give Workshop map makers more control, so community maps can build richer custom modes, such as hostage-based modes with their own round rules. If you load Workshop maps from the console, map_workshop should be a little quicker to use.
