Match review
How to Open a Downloaded CS2 Demo
Load a downloaded FACEIT demo in CS2 with playdemo, recognise the playback controls, and troubleshoot common preparation mistakes.
Sources checked .

Opening a demo has two separate parts: getting a usable recording into the correct folder, then choosing how to move through the match. Start with a recent recording from a source you recognise. Keep its match date and original filename beside it so you can identify the file again if playback fails.
1. Get the recording
For a FACEIT match, open its matchroom and choose Watch Demo. FACEIT's support page specifies matches from the last 30 days. Its download is compressed, so use your file decompression software to extract the recording before trying to play it. A compressed download and the extracted demo are different files. FACEIT's download instructions
Save the original download while you prepare the extracted file. Check that you selected the intended match, especially when several downloads have similar names. For a recording from another provider, follow that provider's access instructions; the FACEIT retention window should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
2. Put the file in the CS2 folder
FACEIT specifies the CS2 installation’s game\csgo folder. Your Steam library location can vary; choose game, then csgo, inside the installation folder.
Give the extracted recording a short, memorable name, such as match-review, while preserving its file extension. Keep a note mapping that name to the match. This makes a typing error easier to spot and avoids confusing two recordings during troubleshooting.
3. Open it with playdemo
Launch CS2 and open the developer console with your assigned key. If you have no console key assigned, FACEIT tells you to assign one in the controls. Enter playdemo match-review, replacing match-review with your own demo name, and press Enter. This follows FACEIT's documented playdemo nameofdemo workflow.
If loading fails, record the exact message before changing anything. Recheck the name you typed and the location of the extracted file. Verify that you are trying to open the recording rather than its compressed archive. These checks address the preparation steps; they do not prove that every recording is compatible with your installed game.
4. Use the playback controls
Valve's November 2025 TrueView illustration shows a playback strip with a pause icon, −15s / +15s jumps, round navigation, and speeds from ¼x to 8x. With the strip visible, use the time jumps to return to a moment and choose 1x for normal speed. The illustration documents that interface; button placement may differ in your build.
The same strip labels MOUSE1: Next Player, SPACE: Next Camera, and X: Toggle X-Ray View, plus End Playback. Use the displayed player and camera hints to choose a perspective. X-Ray can reveal positions for analysis, but those outlines are extra spectator information. Toggle it off when checking what a player could actually see.
5. Find a moment on the timeline
Valve's May 23, 2024 update added kill and death indicators to the demo playback timeline. Use those markers to identify an event you want to revisit, then include the lead-up when watching it. An event marker gives you a destination, but the seconds before it often supply the missing context.
The same update added highlight mode, which shows only kills and deaths for the active player. Use it when your immediate goal is locating those events. Return to the full sequence when you need to see movement, waiting, or a decision that happened between highlights. Do not mistake a highlight sequence for the complete round.
6. Recognise a normal end and a real problem
Valve's May 1, 2024 notes changed demos to pause at the end of a recording instead of returning to the main menu. Reaching the end and seeing playback stop therefore is not, by itself, evidence of a failed download.
If a file will not open, compare it with a second recent recording prepared the same way. Keep the results separate: one failed recording points you toward that file or its compatibility; several failures leave your preparation and installation as possibilities. This comparison narrows the question without promising a universal repair.
Once a demo plays, use the CS2 demo review checklist to turn a moment into a concrete practice cue. For visual differences during playback, read the TrueView guide before judging a single frame.
