Case opening videos and case sites use a lot of shorthand. This glossary explains the common terms in plain English, from site features such as case battles and rakeback to skin details such as float, StatTrak and Doppler phases. Item and trading facts come from Valve and Steam pages where Valve publishes them.
Case site terms
These features belong to third-party case sites, not to CS2 itself, and each site sets its own rules. Read the rules of the site you are on before you rely on any of them.
- Case opening: in CS2, a weapon case is a container that you open with a matching key to get one random item from the list it contains. Case sites copy the idea with their own cases, prices and odds, usually paid from a site balance. Each opening is a chance-based result, not a purchase of a specific skin.
- Case battle: two or more players open the same cases at the same time, and the player whose items have the highest total value usually wins all the items from the battle. Sites add their own modes, such as team battles or modes where the lowest total wins, so read the battle settings before you join.
- Upgrade (upgrader): you offer an item or some balance, choose a more expensive target item, and the site shows your chance of success. The bigger the jump in value, the lower the chance. If the roll succeeds, you get the target item; if it fails, you lose what you put in.
- Rakeback: a site returns a small part of what you spend or wager as site balance, often at a rate that rises with your level. It is a fraction of what you spend, and it does not change the odds of any opening.
- Deposit bonus: extra balance a site adds when you deposit, often a percentage of the deposit and sometimes unlocked by a promo code. Bonus balance can come with conditions, such as wagering requirements or withdrawal limits, so read the terms first. A bonus does not remove the risk of losing your deposit.
- Promo code vs referral link: a promo code is a word you type on a site, usually at sign-up or deposit, to unlock an offer such as a deposit bonus or a free case. A referral link is a sign-up link that connects your new account to the person who shared it. Either way, the site sets the terms of any offer.
- Provably fair: a method that lets you check a result after you play. Before the roll, the site commits to a secret server seed by showing a hashed version of it; the result comes from that seed, your client seed and a counter called a nonce, and the site reveals the server seed afterward so you can recalculate the roll. It shows that the result followed the published method, not that the odds are in your favor.
Skin terms
- Float and wear: every skin has a wear value, often called its float, that sets how worn it looks. Valve’s Workshop finishes guide lists five ranges: Factory New (0.00 to 0.07), Minimal Wear (0.07 to 0.15), Field-Tested (0.15 to 0.37), Well-Worn (0.37 to 0.44) and Battle-Scarred (0.44 to 1.00). Each finish has its own allowed range and the value is picked at random within it, so not every skin comes in all five exteriors.
- StatTrak: a StatTrak item has a counter on the weapon that tracks kills made with it. Valve’s Arms Deal page describes it as a running record of every kill you get with that weapon. A StatTrak version is a separate item from the normal version of the same skin.
- Rarity tiers: a skin’s rarity grade is shown by its color. On the Steam Market listing for the Kilowatt Case, the contents run from Mil-Spec Grade (blue) through Restricted (purple) and Classified (pink) to Covert (red), plus an exceedingly rare special item, a knife. Rare special items such as knives and gloves are marked with a ★ and are the rarest result a case can give.
- Doppler phases: Doppler is a finish, found mainly on knives, whose colors vary from one copy to the next. Traders group the common versions as Phase 1 to Phase 4 and name rarer ones Ruby (mostly red), Sapphire (mostly blue) and Black Pearl (dark, almost black). Two items with the same name can be different phases, so look at the actual item before comparing prices.
- Gamma Doppler: a related finish with mostly green and blue tones. Its common versions are also grouped as Phase 1 to Phase 4, and its rarest version is called Emerald, which is almost entirely green.
- Fade: a finish that blends from one color into another, usually yellow, pink and purple, across the item. How much of each color shows depends on the item’s pattern, so traders often describe a Fade by the share of the blend that is visible, given as a percentage.
- Dragon Lore: AWP | Dragon Lore is a Covert AWP finish with a dragon design from the Cobblestone Collection, which is a map collection rather than a weapon case. Its rarity has made it one of the most expensive and recognized CS2 skins, which is why its name comes up so often in case opening content.
Trading terms
- Trade hold and trade protection: a trade hold is a period when an item cannot be traded or sold on the Steam Market yet. Trade protection is Valve’s July 2025 feature that lets you reverse Counter-Strike item trades from the last 7 days if you lose control of your account or are scammed, and Steam’s Trade Protected Items FAQ explains what happens when trades are reversed. Because of that window, selling sites often hold payouts for about a week, as covered in Where to Sell CS2 Skins.
Play responsibly
Case opening sites are gambling. Use them only if you are 18 or older, meet the legal age where you live, and the service is allowed there. The odds favor the site, so over time you should expect to lose more than you win: only spend money you can afford to lose, set a budget first and never chase losses. More advice is on the responsible play page, and the channel’s current site codes are listed on the Codes page.
